Smurfit Kappa Partners With Plastic Soup Foundation

Smurfit Kappa has announced a collaboration with the Plastic Soup Foundation, on an initiative that is calling for widespread adoption of sustainable packaging.

The Dutch-based Plastic Soup Foundation campaigns for an end to the pollution of the world’s oceans, with the title of the organisation referring to the array of micro-plastics contaminating the world’s oceans.

Joining forces with the foundation, Smurfit Kappa reported that a ‘strong synergy’ exists between the foundation’s mission and its own Better Planet Packaging initiative.

Integral Part

“An integral part of our Better Planet Packaging initiative is to collaborate with new partners like the Plastic Soup Foundation, to inspire innovative, new ideas and encourage change,” said Saverio Mayer, CEO of Smurfit Kappa Europe (pictured).

“The challenge of ocean pollution is something that can only be solved with open dialogue between multiple stakeholders,” added Mayer.

The two groups recently held an event to outline their collective goals, under the banner ‘Changing the Future of Packaging’.

Speaking about the partnership, the Plastic Soup Foundation’s Harmen Spek said, “We have long been familiar with Smurfit Kappa’s sustainability credentials, but were even more interested in working with them when we read about how much they are doing to create paper-based alternatives for plastic.”
