Tesco To Offer Vegan Food In Meat Aisles

UK retailer Tesco has announced that it will offer vegan products in its meat aisles at larger Tesco stores to cater to the changing shopping habits of British customers.

Director of plant-based innovation at Tesco, Derek Sarno, said, "The increase in demand for more plant-based food and people becoming flexitarian is having a massive effect on the way many people shop, and as a result the retail industry is having to adapt.

"It makes sense to arrange them next to each other in the same aisle and bring a wider breadth of options to choose from."

The products in the new arrangement will include vegan and vegetarian items by established names such as Heck, Vivaris, Beyond Meat, and Vegetarian Butcher.

Changing Trends

Campaigns like ‘Meat-Free Mondays’ have resulted in 21% of UK households to reduce their meat intake, according to data from Kantar.

Statistics have also shown that 1% of all households include at least one vegan individual, while 5% of households have a vegetarian and 10% a flexitarian.

In 2018, 92% of plant-based meals were eaten by non-vegans in the UK, data from Kantar Insights 2018 has revealed.
