VéGé, Selex, Essselunga And Conad Boost Market Share In Italy

The economic crisis has had an uneven impact on the Italian food retail sector, a study has found, with some players increasing their market share, while others have seen a decline.

VéGé (+2.1%), Selex (+1.5%), Essselunga (+1.4%) and Conad (+1.2%) registered the best performance in the period from January 2013 to January 2016, according to data from Iri reported by business daily Il Sole 24 Ore.

Market leader Coop (pictured) largely maintained its position (-0.1%), as did hypermarket chains Finder and Pam (-0.4%). Sigma (-1.6%), Auchan and Sisa (-1%), Carrefour and Despar (-0.8%) all lost ground.

In 2015, sales at major chains, including discounters, rose by 2.6 per cent to €60.7 billion.

All categories saw growth - supermarkets by 4.5%, so-called superettes (usually between 200 and 400 m2) by 0.6% and discount chains by 1.1% - while hypermarkets were down by 1.1%.
