Waitrose Sales Up 3.4% After UK Bank Holiday
UK retailer Waitrose has announced that total sales, excluding fuel, were up by 3.4% last week, which it attributes to the warm bank holiday weather.
The retailer says that sales of cider and beer were driven by the weekend weather, with the overall beers, wines and spirits category seeing sales rise by 21.6% year-on-year. This was also helped by a 25% off promotion on wine and champagne.
Other categories also benefitted from the sunshine. Sales of children’s ice lollies were up by 16%, sun cream by 27%, and pre-packaged sandwiches by 5%.
Waitrose also reports that its latest private label product, celeriac rice, performed well in its first week. The product offers customers a new, unusual alternative to carbohydrates.
