Waitrose Sales Down Marginally After Unsettled Weather In UK

UK retailer Waitrose has announced that its total sales for last week, excluding fuel, were down by 0.5% compared to the same week last year.

The supermarket chain says that this is due to better weather conditions during the equivalent week in 2016, and increased marketing activity around the launch of its Waitrose 1 private label range, which just celebrated its first anniversary.

Trends

Sorbet sales were up 64% and sales of sun care products were also strong, however sales of frozen vegetables increased by 11% and fresh vegetables by 15%, showing that consumers are divided between purchasing summer products, and those more associated with colder temperatures.

Wine sales also experienced an increase of 6% in this period, which Waitrose aims to build upon ahead of English Wine Week (pictured), which begins 27 May.
