Walmart China's Sean Clarke To Take Asda CEO Role

Walmart has announced that the former head of its Chinese operation, Sean Clarke, is to be appointed president and chief executive of Asda, its UK arm, effective July 11.

As well as heading up Walmart China, Clarke previously worked at Walmart Japan and Walmart Canada, having started his career at Asda in 2001. Roger Burnley has been named deputy chief executive.

“Actively managing our global business portfolio is a key element of our international strategy, and we must have the right talent in place to lead our businesses through times of change," said David Cheesewright, president and CEO of Walmart International.

“Sean is one of our most experienced global executives, and through his leadership we will build upon the momentum of Project Renewal to reposition Asda in a very competitive market place. […] Together with the existing Asda executive team, Sean and Roger will serve as an incredibly powerful team to lead our Asda business. Their complementary skills and combined expertise in the U.K. retail market and globally brings an unrivaled breadth of retail knowledge to Asda.”

Andy Clarke, Asda's current chief executive steps down from his position at the end of July.
