Yoplait Teams Up With OFA To Protect Bees

Yoplait, together with the General Mills Foundation, has partnered with the French Observatory of Adipology (OFA) to launch the first 'Journee des Fleurs pour les Abeilles' (Flowers Day for Bees) in France.

According to yoghurt firm Yoplait, bees are responsible for one third of our food. However, the pollinators are threatened by some of the insecticides used by farmers, new predators such as the Asian hornet, as well as a lack of flowers for food, especially in autumn when bees have to stock up for winter.

The OFA says that it is committed to resettling bees in France and Europe through applied research, training farmers, and creating specialised bee farms. Yoplait began this commitment in 2015 with 'Petites Fleurs Folies' - a garden of melliferous flowers designed by artist Gad Weil which was set up at the base of the Eiffel Tower.

Local Project

For the first 'Journee des Fleurs pour les Abeilles', more than 2,000 General Mills employees in France, including Yoplait, will receive packets of melliferous plant seeds to be sown near its six factories. It is expected that 20,000 square meters of flowers will be grown through the project.

This is part of General Mills' global commitment to bees. The company has been working since 2013 with non-profit environmental organisation Xerces Society and Marla Spivak, entomologist at the University of Minnesota, to encourage research in this area.
