Italy Makes Origin Label For Dairy Products Mandatory

An obligation to include the origin of dairy products on labelling has become mandatory in Italy.

The measure was introduced in Brussels in mid-October, and was followed by the signing of a decree by the Ministers of Agriculture, Maurizio Martina, and Economic Development, Carlo Calenda.

This system, which will enter into effect on 1 January 2017, will require producers to clearly indicate the origin of the raw materials of many products such as milk, butter, yogurt, mozzarella, cheese and dairy products.

According to the decree, the milk products or its derivatives must indicate the source of the raw material in a clear, visible and easily legible label.

In addition to milk and cheese, Italy requires the origin on the label for chicken meat and derived products, beef, fruit and vegetables, eggs, honey, tomato puree, fish and extra virgin olive oil.
