BRC Reports Strong Retail Growth For October

A BRC-KPMG report has noted a strong overall sales growth across the UK retail-sector for October, making the month the most successful this year.

Overall, sales rose by 2.4%, compared to a 0.9% increase in October 2015. Sales increased by 1.7%, on a like-for-like basis from October 2015 - when they had decreased by 0.2% from the previous year.

In the three months leading up to October, like-for-like food sales increased by 0.1%, non-food sales by 0.6%. Overall in this period, food sales increased by 1.5% and non-food sales by 0.8%. Online sales grew by 11.1%, but overall in-store sales declined by 1.3%.

"October’s figures paint a more positive picture of retail sales (...). There was a more balanced contribution from all product categories, nearly all of which saw a degree of sales growth. It is clear from today’s figures, that despite the inflationary pressure that’s gradually building in the supply chain, retailers are currently effectively managing the additional cost burdens and continue to entice their customers with great choice and value", said Helen Dickenson OBE, CEO of the British Retail Consortium (BRC).
