Petrus '89 Leads Sotheby's London Sale With Jayer Burgundies

Six magnums of Petrus 1989 Pomerol sold for 28,200 pounds ($39,762) at Sotheby’s in London this month, in an auction that also featured historic vintages from Burgundy grower Henri Jayer and wines direct from the cellars of Tuscan estate Ornellaia.

Five bottles of Vosne Romanee Cros Parantoux 1986 Jayer sold for 19,975 pounds and four bottles of Jayer’s 1990 Echezeaux went for 18,800 pounds, according to an emailed statement from Sotheby’s. More recent wines also were featured, including 12 bottles of Chateau Mouton Rothschild 2000 that fetched 12,925 pounds.

The Liv-ex Fine Wine 50 Index of leading Bordeaux wines is heading for a fourth straight monthly gain, a trend that if confirmed would be its longest winning streak for three years. Auction houses also report more buoyant demand for Bordeaux after price declines in the past four years, as collectors and investors look toward the so-called en primeur marketing campaign for Bordeaux 2015 wines still in barrel.

“It was encouraging to see strong interest across the board for young vintages of classed growth Bordeaux ahead of the en primeur campaign next month, while connoisseurs were attracted by the offering of Ornellaia’s library wines,” Stephen Mould, head of Sotheby’s wine in Europe, said in the statement. “Elsewhere, collectors snapped up an array of Mouton Rothschild vintages.”

A single bottle of Mouton 1945 sold for 8,640 pounds while six magnums of Chateau Cheval Blanc 1990 fetched 7,638 pounds. A bottle of Romanee Conti 2009 Domaine de la Romanee Conti Burgundy went for 8,225 pounds.

Mould said interest in the Ornellaia selections led to demand particularly for the 2001 and 2006 vintages. Overall the sale on March 16 totaled 886,820 pounds.
