Walmart in Mexico has implemented a price comparison between its Bodega Aurrerá Express discount banner and the rival convenience store chain, OXXO. The move is part of a company strategy to reinforce its low price stance and gain market share.
Walmart’s move follows a similar initiative carried out last year by OXXO, in which it offered products such as tuna at a competitive price. Analysts believe OXXO will continue to outperform the market, posting like-for-like sales growth of 10 per cent compared to the 2 per cent market average. Walmart has become Mexico’s largest retailer since it came to Mexico in 1991. It currently operates 671 stores and annual sales of US$10.6 billion.
Oxxo is approaching second position in the Mexican ranking retailers, behind Walmart, and above Soriana, currently the second largest player in the country. (13 Sept)
