Sprint and Vantiv, which offers payment-processing services for the retail industry, have launched Vantiv Mobile Checkout, a service that allows retailers to replace cash registers with a mobile checkout app on the Apple iPad using wireless connectivity.
The platform also consists of an encrypted credit card reader, tablet stand, cash drawer and countertop receipt printer. Sprint’s business sales channel will offer the mobile platform, which support Apple iOS 6 and iOS 7 operating systems.
Announced yesterday, Vantiv Mobile Checkout combines storefront technology with mobile data that will help store owners with decision making on sales and inventory, according to Ben Vos, vice president for Sprint’s Emerging Solutions group.
“Our retail customers have been asking for a secure, integrated tablet-based point-of-sale system,” Vos said in a statement. “Together with Vantiv, we are delivering a robust mobile tablet-based POS solution that’s very affordable and rich with capabilities.”
Connecting the tablet-based POS system to the cloud allows workers to process sales anywhere on the sales floor, access real-time updates on inventory and manage payroll.
By connecting to the cloud, no data is stored locally on the device, according to Vantiv.
The platform allows retail workers to enable checkout for sidewalk sales, remote outdoor kiosks or in the field. Salespeople outside in an auto dealer lot or workers in a large warehouse or superstore could benefit from the portability of the iPad.
