European Food Safety Body To Re-Examine Palm Oil Risks
The European Food Safety Authority (EFSA) is set to ‘re-examine’ its warning on the potential health risks from palm oil and other associated oils, according to a spokesperson for the European body.
Reuters reported that EFSA scientists are to take into account reports from the World Health Organisation and UN Food and Agriculture Organisation, published in November.
This found that while the process to refine vegetable oils produces contaminants, consumers’ exposure to these substances was of ‘less concern’.
Fears over the potential harmful effects of palm oil have drawn mixed responses from the trade, with Nutella maker Ferrero defending the use of palm oil in its products, and Coop Italy banning their use from its private label range.
