Port wine sales in Portugal grew by 21.7 per cent in the first quarter of 2016 over the same period of 2015, the highest rate of growth the market has yet seen, reaching €10.9 million.
According to figures published by the Institute of Wines of Douro and Port (IVDP), €57.5 million worth of Port wine was exported, with the main markets being France, The Netherlands, Belgium, the US, the UK, Germany, Canada, Denmark and Switzerland.
During the first quarter of 2016, sales of Douro wines grew 18.2 per cent nationally, to €17.3 million, while exports grew to €11.9 million.
Overall, sales of Douro and Port wines in Portugal grew 4.1 per cent to €28.2 million, with a 1.9 per cent growth of the average price and of 2.1 per cent increase in the number of cases sold. The quantity sold abroad dropped slightly, to 1.45 million cases.
