Kesko Commits To New Energy-Efficiency Agreement

Finnish retail group Kesko has announced that it is signing up for the 2017-2015 Energy Efficiency Agreement for Industries, an agreement between the state and the industrial sectors, established to promote and achieve the highest attainable energy efficiency across the sectors, nationwide.

The K-Group first joined the Energy Efficiency Agreement for the commerce sector in 2008. It achieved 97% of its target for the end of 2015, saving 64 out of 65 gigawatt-hours – 64 million watt-hours – in energy.

In subscribing to the new agreement, the company now commits to reducing its energy consumption by a further 7.5% by the end of 2025.

The company signed the Accession Document, outlining a number of energy-saving strategies, on 14 October 2016.

In addition to the solar panels installed on supermarket roofs and the introduction of LED lights and lids on chest freezers, new energy-saving measures will include the remote monitoring and adjusting of refrigeration equipment, recovering condensation heat from the refrigeration process, and recycling the carbon dioxide recovered from industrial processes as an alternative, more eco-friendly refrigerant.
