Swiss supermarket group Migros has announced that it is to place special labels on any goods that come from "Occupied Palestinian Territories". The news follows a meeting between the retailer and BDS (Boycott, Divestment and Sanctions) Switzerland.
Migros said that the decision to label its packaging in this way speaks for a “greater transparency” and to an alignment with Swiss and UN condemnation of the occupation. Monika Weibel, spokeswoman for Migros, told the European Jewish Press that the retailer wants “to let customers decide which products they want to buy”. Products from the settlements will now be described as “Made in Occupied Palestinian Territories”. BDS is a long-term campaigner for Swiss grocers to stop selling products from Israel. The organisation believes that such bans would make Israel recognise Palestinian rights. (7 Jun)
