Delhaize Appoint Johnny Thijs As Board Member

Belgian supermarket chain Delhazie yesterday confirmed that former bpost CEO Johnny Thijs is to be appointed onto the board of directors as an independent for three years.

Until January of this year, Thijs was CEO of the Belgian post office. He resigned from thiat role because of a wage dispute after bpost's majority shareholder, the Belgian Government, capped public CEO pay to €650,000 per year. Thijs had earned nearly double that in the previous year, and worked at bpost since 2002.

In a statement, the company said that at an Ordinary Shareholders' Meeting, to be held on May 22, the Board of Directors of Delhaize Group will propose the appointment of Mr. Johnny Thijs as an independent director for a term of three years.

Prior to bpost, he worked for Rothmans Groep, Masterfoods, Côte d'Or-Jacobs Suchard, Interbrew and Ter Beke, while he still presides the board at Belgian water company Spadel.

He will combine that with his new job at Delhaize, a chain with more than 3,500 stores worldwide and a 2013 turnover of €21.1 billion.
