Did you know ...? 23 July 2014

Did you know … Tesco shares took a hammering the day after Dave Lewis was announced as its new CEO? When the appointment was initially announced, shares rose by 3.6 to 288.6 pence, but they were down by over 11 to 277.35 pence by close on Tuesday. At the time of writing, they look to be slipping another two, hovering around the 275-pence mark. Could this be an indication that investors are not too happy with the appointment? Did you know … a Sainsbury's store in Staffordshire, in the UK, is being powered entirely by its own food waste? The store can receive its electricity directly from the UK's largest anaerobic digestion plant via a 1.5-km cable between the two. The plant turns the waste into bio-methane gas, which is then used to generate electricity. It has enabled the store to come off the UK national electricity grid, the first time that a retailer has been able to do so. Did you know … Fortnum & Mason is set to open a 1,000-square-foot airport store and bar in Heathrow’s Terminal 5 this October? The store will carry a selection of products from F&M's flagship Piccadilly store, with a strong focus on food gifting, a trend that, it claims, is gathering pace. It will sell several of its iconic hampers and food products, and there will also be a chilled savoury counter. The store has recently been diversifying its business, opening a store in St Pancras International Station last November and its first standalone store outside the UK, in Dubai, last March.
