Snicker bars and Mars bars are to be reduced by more than 10% in size, yet the price of the chocolate bars will remain unchanged.
Mars is being shrunk down from 58g to 51g while Snickers is being trimmed down from 58g to 48g.
The Mars company told the Grocer that it had to shrink its products in order to meet its public health targets. The firm made a calorie reduction pledge last year, which promises to cut down the calorie content of its single-serve products to a maximum of 250-cal by the end of 2013.
The amount of calories in a Mars bar will now drop from 260 to 229 and in a Snickers bar from 280 to 245.
The company cut the saturated fat content of a Mars bar by 15% and removed all transfats. Similarly in 2008, the size of both bars was reduced from 62.5g to 58g while leaving the price the same.
"As part of our global commitment to promote responsible consumption, and as a signatory of the Responsibility Deal's calorie reduction pledge, we said we would ensure that all our single-serve chocolate products would contain no more than 250 calories per portion." a spokesman told the Telegraph.
