Unicoop Firenze To Expand Range Of Local Produce

Italian regional cooperative retailer Unicoop Firenze plans to introduce products from a further 200 suppliers from the Tuscany region to its store shelves.

Currently, out of a total of about 2,200 Unicoop Firenze suppliers, more than 700 are Tuscan (about 32%), equating to a total value of €454 million and representing 23% of total sales.

The company says that its intention is to promote the gastronomic culture of the region and support the development of the small local producers, enhancing the relationship between producers and consumers.

Tuscan Trends

A study commissioned by the retailer reveals that Tuscan consumers spend €170 more per year on food compared to the average Italian shopper, equating to a total of €6,000 each year per family.

There has been a double-digit growth in the consumption of fruit and vegetables and dietary products in Tuscany, above the Italian average, while the increased consumption of gluten-free products is in line with the rest of the country.

In particular, sales of white meat and rice are increasing, while pasta and bread consumption is decreasing.

According to the study, Tuscan shoppers are more inclined to buy oil, fruit and vegetables if they are produced in the region, followed by cheeses, dairy products and meat.
