Sainsbury's Trials iPad Shopping Cart

UK grocer Sainsbury’s is trialing a new shopping trolley to allow shoppers to interact with their iPads in its Cromwell Road store in Kensington, London. The broadcaster Sky developed the trolleys to promote its Sky Go service; iPad users can watch live games and news on their devices with the new technology.

Setwo Designs developed the trolleys for Sky. "Being able to create a gadget that is practical yet innovative is often a challenge but I think with the trolley we've cracked it," said Ian Burgess of Setwo Designs. "The trolley can be used in the traditional way for shopping yet streams the latest sports news easily." The new trolley is fitted with an iPad dock and speakers. It also has a sensor fitted on its bumpers to warn users if they are too close to other customers when looking at their iPad. A solar-powered battery pack offers customers the ability to charge the iPad.

If the trial is successful, Sainsbury’s will roll out the trolleys across its UK stores. ?(31 Aug)
