Emmi Acquires Local Speciality Cheese-Maker

Swiss dairy group Emmi has acquired Käserei Studer, a speciality cheese company from the east of the country, for an undisclosed sum.

Käserei Studer produces a range of semi-hard and hard speciality cheeses, including Der Scherfe Maxx semi-hard cheeses, distributed across Switzerland and Germany. The firm has a full-time staff of 24 and generated sales of CHF20 million (€16.4 million) last year.

Emmi said the acquisition will strengthen its position in the market and will expand its speciality cheese offering. The group plans to leverage its existing international distribution channels to grown the Käserei Studer business. However, Käserei Studer will continue to operate on an independent basis and its management team remains unchanged.

Emmi reported net sales of CHF2,981 million (€2.4 billion) in 2012 and has 5,074 employees.

Emmi CEO Urs Riedener said, "Käserei Studer AG has excellent know-how in the production of speciality cheeses and makes premium quality Swiss products. Emmi can help the company expand sales internationally. This is a win-win situation for both parties". (11 April)
