A new supermarket price ranking study by French consumer association UFC-Que Choisir has put the spotlight on the huge differences in grocery prices across supermarkets and regions in France.
The prices of 78 items – including L’Oreal hair products - were compared across more than 3,000 stores in the country.
The findings highlight the cheapest and most expensive supermarkets in France.
LeClerc was declared the cheapest for the selected items, while in terms of fruit and vegetables, upmarket retailer Monoprix proved to be the most expensive.
The data also shows many disparities in pricing across French regions.
At a LeClerc store in Lanester, Brittany, the products cost €273.
In the southern Parisian suburb of Sceaux, the same items totalled €394 at Monoprix.
On average the price for the trolley of goods was €314.
The average prices for the products in France’s main supermarkets were as follows: LeClerc - €295, Géant Casino - €300, Hyper U - €307, Intermarché Hypermarket, Carrefour - €311, Super U, Intermarché Super - €312, Intermarché Contact - €313, Auchan - €320, Cora, Carrefour Market - €324, Casino - €329, U Express - €334 and Monoprix - €362.
This equated to an average price difference of €67 between LeClerc and Monoprix for the supermarket products.
Brittany, the west of the Pays de la Loire region and Poitou-Charente were recorded as being the cheapest areas of France to shop for the items.
Paris, the region of Ile de France and Corsica were the most expensive areas to do supermarket shopping.
