Germany Leading In Organic Food Sales

The European organic market remains a growth market although somewhat more restrained than in previous years. However, there is a clear West-East divide with regard to the industry. Germany, with almost €6 billion turnover per year is the biggest organic market in the EU; sales of organic food in Germany increased by about 2 per cent to €5.9 billion in 2010.

Germany is followed by France with around €3 billion annually and the UK with a value of about €2 billion. Italy reached €1.5 billion in yearly organic sales rank to claim fourth position. However, no significant growth in organic products has been recorded in Eastern Europe.

The 27 EU countries in total are on par with the largest organic market in the world, the United States;  Europeans and Americans each consume organic food worth around €17 billion annually. (7 Sept)
