Plastic Bank Prevents One Billionth Plastic Bottle From Entering The Ocean

Social enterprise Plastic Bank has announced it has achieved the milestone of preventing one billion plastic bottles from entering the world's oceans.

The group, which operates in Haiti, Brazil, Indonesia, the Philippines, and Egypt, cited its partnership with household products manufacturer SC Johnson as "instrumental" in helping it to achieve this milestone.

“Plastic waste entering our oceans is one of our greatest global challenges," commented David Katz, founder and CEO of Plastic Bank. "At a time when the world is calling for greater responsibility, this significant milestone is evidence of our ability to make deliberate environmental, social and economic impact."

Collection Points

As part of its partnership with SC Johnson, Plastic Bank has helped create more than 250 collection points for plastic across Indonesia, the Philippines and Brazil since 2018, with plans to expand to Thailand and Vietnam by 2022.

It has also prevented more than 10.4 million kilograms of plastic from disrupting ocean ecosystems, and provided more than 15,000 people with additional income.

“By joining forces with Plastic Bank, we are building a recycling ecosystem that helps prevent plastic waste from threatening the health of our planet and provides a pathway to greater economic mobility for vulnerable communities," commented Fisk Johnson, chairman and CEO of SC Johnson.

"We enthusiastically endorse others to join Plastic Bank in its efforts to create a regenerative plastics economy.”

SC Johnson launched a new packaging format comprised of 100% recycled ocean-bound plastic for its home cleaning brand Windex in 2019, and earlier this year followed that up with the launch of 100% recycled ocean-bound plastic bottles for its Mr Muscle brand.
