Coffee Sector In Portugal Doubles In Value Since 2009

The coffee sector in Portugal doubled turnover between 2009 and 2015, from €118 million to €257 million, according to research by Nielsen.

The sector already accounts for 5 per cent of the food industry in Portugal and growth has been largely be attributed to the appearance of the capsules systems.

In 2009, the pure roasted coffees segment represented 45 per cent of the total category, dropping to 20 per cent in 2015.

For their part, capsules have seen double digit growth, taking over the dominant position last year, accounting for over 60 per cent of the market.

In the past two years, roasted black coffee was consumed by less than 8 per cent of Portuguese families.
