Aldi Withdraw Sausage Rolls In Ireland Over Sulphur Labelling

Hard-discounter Aldi has taken a number of sausage roll ranges off of shelves in Ireland because of a labelling error which can make the food unsafe for people with certain allergies.

The German grocery giant told the Food Safety Authority of Ireland (FSAI) that the packaging of Kelly’s sausage rolls omitted sulphites. so they removed the products. Sulphites can trigger allergic reactions say the FSAI, particularly in asthmatics.

“Sulphites were not declared on the label of all batches of the sausage rolls listed,” reads a statement from the FSAI.

“This may make them unsafe for consumers who are allergic to or intolerant of sulphur dioxide or sulphites. These products were sold in Aldi stores.”

Sulphites were not declared on; Kelly’s 8 Premium Mini Pork Sausage Rolls, Kelly’s 16 Premium Cocktail Pork Sausage Rolls and Kelly’s 4 Jumbo Pork Sausage Rolls, all of which were sold in Aldi stores.

Speaking to Irish news website The Journal.ie, a spokesperson for the supermarket chain said that "regular independent testing of all products" is common practice.

“Aldi can confirm that routine product testing highlighted a labelling issue in relation to our Kelly’s sausage roll products. We immediately informed the Food Safety Authority of Ireland (FSAI) of the matter and removed the products from sale. We are now investigating the issue with our supplier.

“Customers who have purchased this product should return it to their nearest Aldi store for a full refund. We apologise for any inconvenience and thank customers for their co-operation.”
