French Supermarket Worker Retains Job After Online Campaign

A French supermarket cashier, who picked up a discarded special offer coupon, was threatened with dismissal by her employers. However, the woman, known only as Ann-Marie, will keep her job after an online campaign was mounted to support her. The cashier works for a branch of the Cora supermarket chain in Mondelange in the east of France.

The cashier saw a promotional offer for a fast food restaurant on the back of a receipt left behind by a customer; she picked up the receipt, thinking she could treat her son with the "2 for 1" offer. "I tore it off, in front of everyone and then at the end of my shift I was summoned to the see the head of security and my boss who said it was the property of Cora." Anne-Marie has worked for the supermarket for ten years; she earns €940 a month. She is also a representative for the CGT union. When an Internet campaign was launched in her defence, some speculated that the reason for her dismissal could be her role in the union.    Cora quickly announced the cashier would no longer face dismissal. "The management of Cora Mondelange has decided not to pursue the case against an employee. We are aware of the emotion generated by the news that appeared this morning," the company said on its Facebook page. (3 Nov)   © 2011 - ESM: European Supermarket Magazine
