Lidl Becomes Netherland's Largest Discounter

Lidl has passed Aldi to become the largest discounter in The Netherlands, according to Nielsen data. The research firm reports that Lidl increased its market share in 2013 from 7.5% to 9%. The increase means that Lidl may have added €500 million in revenue in one year.

Lidl also may be gaining market share in Spain. The discounter aims to invest €180 million this year to open 20 stores while also upgrading 50 others. Lidl will open a new logistic centre in Murcia as part of the investment plan. Lidl now has 525 stores and eight logistic centres in Spain.
