Tesco Tackles Food Waste With Mini Avocados

UK retailer Tesco has announced that it will be selling miniature avocados, as well as the regular-sized varieties, for a limited time.

The smaller fruit, which is about the same size as an egg, will be sold in packs of six, in a recyclable egg-style box.

In recent years, Tesco has seen a growth in the popularity of avocados, with demand increasing by over 30% in 2016. The retailer is hoping that this trial will further widen the product's appeal while benefitting its suppliers.

Food Waste

"This is a brilliant way to offer customers great-tasting, high-quality avocados which previously would have been rejected by growers because of their size," said Tesco avocado buyer James Cantoni.

“They are perfect for customers who want to snack, without the usual fuss or worry of wasting the other half of the avocado, and it also helps producers, who are able to sell even more of their avocado crop.”

Tesco had previously committed to ensure that no food safe for human consumption will go to waste from its retail operations by the end of 2017.

Some recent initiatives that the company has undertaken in this area include stocking 'wonky' fruit and vegetables in its stores, selling larger boxes of produce following bumper crops this summer, and creating new, resealable salad bags.
