Lidl Switzerland Promotes Environmental Sustainability With WWF

Lidl Switzerland intends to become the leading discounter in the country in terms of environmental sustainability by collaborating with conservation foundation World Wildlife Fund (WWF) Switzerland.

With this goal in mind, the discounter and WWF will work together to define sustainability goals and further promote the efficient use of resources and sustainable supply.

Lidl Switzerland is known for its efficient business model, and careful use of resources, with ecological awareness being a crucial concept. It was in fact the first Swiss retailer to be certified 'CO2 neutral' at the end of 2015. The company also attaches great importance to efficiency in the use of resources and climate protection.

According to Lidl Switzerland CEO Georg Kröll, the collaboration will result in further reduction of the company's ecological footprint.

"As an intelligent discounter we want to become an example in terms of sustainability. We will adopt even more efficient behaviour in terms of resources, while the range will be adapted by switching to greener products”, he explained.

WWF Switzerland and Lidl Switzerland have defined sustainability targets to be met in the following areas: fish, palm oil, soya, cocoa, paper, hygiene items, and lighting.

By 2019, the fish and seafood assortment will be adjusted to the standards dictated by one of three recognised certifications: MSC (Marine Stewardship Council), ASC (Aquaculture Stewardship Council) or Bio.

The two partners have also outlined measures aimed at reducing CO2 and promoting the use of alternative energies.
