Ahold Delhaize banner Mega Image has opened its first stores in eastern Romania, in Bacău and Iași, with a further store to open soon in Buzău, in the country's south east, according to reports.

Romanian news portal economica.net reported that the stores are the group's first in the Moldavia region.

The group is currently seeking to employ as many as 10 senior managers for the three stores, according to the news site.

Mega Image operates more than 600 stores in Romania, in Bucharest, Constanta, Ploiesti, Brasov, Targoviste, Timisoara and Cluj-Napoca, having first entered the country in 1995. It trades under the Mega Image and Shop&Go formats.

According to Ahold Delhaize's most recent quarterly results, its Romanian business reported 'strong growth' in the third quarter of the year.

Overall, the group's Central and Southeastern Europe division, which also includes operations in the Czech Republic, Serbia and Greece, saw a 3.4% increase in sales for the period, with operating income falling by 14.1%.
