Eroski, WWF Collaborate For Forest Conservation

Spanish supermarket chain Eroski has announced a collaboration with WWF for a solidarity campaign focussed on forest conservation and ecosystem recovery.

Eroski will forward profits from the sale of solidarity bags to WWF.

The campaign starts on August 9 and will run until November this year. It is part of a renewed agreement between the supermarket chain and the environment body.

In March 2017, Eroski carried out a 'symbolic blackout' of its web pages in response to WWF's initiative, Earth Hour.

State Of Forests In Spain Alarming

The general secretary of WWF, Juan Carlos del Olmo described the state of forests in Spain as "alarming" and said that the collaboration with Eroski would allow the organisation to work towards its environment goals.

"In Spain they[forests] barely occupy 29% of the surface they could occupy, and the majority that have survived to this day are not in a favourable state of conservation. The European Union has set the goal of restoring 15% of the degraded ecosystems by 2020," he added.

Regenerating Forests

The funds from Eroski will be used to regenerate forests and create biodiversity to promote economic activities in rural areas.

Restoring forests will ensure the creation of quality natural resources and result in a profitable landscape that is capable of withstanding future impacts.
