Giant Food Stores Unveils Strategic Growth Plan

Giant Food Stores, a subsidiary of Dutch retail company Ahold Delhaize, has announced plans to invest $114 million (€102 million) in growing its business.

The company plans to expand over the next 18 months, in an attempt to build on the success of last year.

In 2019, the business opened 17 new stores and launched two new brands, Giant Heirloom Market and Giant Direct.

As part of its investment for this year, Giant Food Stores will invest in a Giant Direct e-commerce fulfilment centre, open two new stores and remodel its 35 existing stores.

The omni-channel fulfilment centre will be Giant’s largest centre and will support its e-commerce brand Giant Direct, which has seen double-digit growth since its launch last year.


The centre will provide increased capacity, improved distribution and room to expand its home delivery and in-store pick-up (for online orders) sectors.

Giant and Peapod Digital Labs will partner together to lead the innovation development for the facility.

New Store Openings

The company's two new store openings will be located in Pennsylvania, while the company has already announced a fourth Giant Heirloom Market and urban flagship store in Philadelphia to be completed this year.

Elsewhere, in terms of the remodelled stores, renovations will include optimised product assortment, streamlined order pickup, improved merchandise displays and modernised décor.
