Auchan Italia To Stop Sales of Eggs From Caged Hen Farms

Retailer Auchan Italia has announced it will stop selling eggs produced in caged hen farms by 2022. The move applies to both its Auchan hypermarkets and Simply supermarkets.

For some time now, Italy’s fifth largest retailer had started removing eggs sourced from caged hen farms for its private label products. As a result, all private label eggs now come from free range or organic farms.

Since the beginning of 2017, the company also started the process of switching suppliers for its eggs, opting for those sourced from hens in free range farms.

The initiative is the result of a dialogue with Animal Equity and aims to reduce the suffering of birds.

Auchan is the third Italian grocery retailer to stop selling eggs from caged hens, after Esselunga and Coop.
