Italian Coffee Consumption Declines, Bucking Global Trend

Coffee consumption in Italy was down by 3.8% last year compared to 2014, despite global markets seeing an increase of 2%.

The data was revealed in a survey by Observatory DeLonghi, which also found that only 3% of Italians do not drink coffee.

Europe remains the world's leading market for coffee and Italy ranks ninth for consumption, with an annual per capita value of 5.6 kg. On average, Italian consumers drink about four coffees a day.

There is a gender difference in the type of coffee generally consumed - 77.7% of Italian women prefer to drink a macchiato or cappuccino (especially at breakfast), while only 23.7% of men add milk to espresso. Also, women tend to cease coffee consumption in the early afternoon, whereas men drink coffee until late at night.
