Coop Sweden Launches 'Intelligent Packaging' For Meat

Swedish retailer Coop has launched new packaging for its private label ground beef, which the company says will provide great benefits for the environment.

The new 'mince in a roll' design will replace traditional plastic trays. This will reduce the amount of packaging by 82%, which in turn will make the product more efficient to transport, reducing emissions by 31%.

The 'intelligent packaging' is also more sustainable from a recycling perspective, and will double the shelf life of the meat, reducing food waste.

Smart Design

"This shows what can be done with smarter packaging design," said Louise König, sustainability manager at Coop Sweden.

"It means we can transport with less environmental impact and the mince takes up less space in our meat counters, while our customers have to carry home less plastic and have mince with a longer shelf life."

This design is currently being used for 500g packs of minced beef, but the retailer plans to expand the concept to other meat products in the future.

Coop Sweden says that it is constantly working to reduce the environmental impact of its packaging. In 2015 it introduced meat packaging made of 75% recycled materials.
