Delhaize Appoints Xavier Piesvaux As New CEO

Belgian retailer Delhaize has appointed Xavier Piesvaux as its new CEO, effective 11 September, succeeding Denis Knoops, who is leaving the company after 25 years.

Piesvaux has 27 years' experience in retail, including positions as senior vice-president at Walmart Canada and CEO of Romanian retailer Mega Image.

Delhaize says that he is the 'right successor' to make Delhaize the top supermarket in Belgium and Luxembourg again.

"I'm looking forward to serving our more than five million customers a week, together with more than 30,000 Delhaize employees and our network of affiliates," said Piesvaux.

Parent company Ahold Delhaize first announced this change in management last week, in addition to the announcement that Wouter Kolk, current brand president of Albert Heijn, will become chief operating officer of the group's Europe and Indonesia businesses, effective 1 January 2018.
