Coming Up In ESM Issue 6 2020

Copy Deadline: 23 November 2020
Goes to Press 26 November 2020

In our final issue of the year, ESM: European Supermarket Magazine will be undertaking a major report on the Private Label industry – building on our report published earlier this year, and looking at the trends and innovations that are driving store brand innovation as we head into 2021. In addition, we shine a spotlight on retailers' and brands' latest sustainability endeavours in our Sustainability 2021 report, explore the latest trends in Fruit & Vegetables, Refrigeration, Organic Products and much much more.

The Private Label Issue

The year 2020 will go down as one of the most unpredictable periods in the history of European grocery retailing, and while many brands are still feeling the impact of COVID-19 on their operations, the private label sector is going from strength to strength. With this in mind, ESM's Private Label Issue will feature contributions from retailers across Europe, getting their perspective on the challenges and opportunities facing the private label industry as it emerges from the coronavirus crisis, and asking them for their assessment of how the sector will develop as the decade progresses.

Sustainability 2021

Following our inaugural 'Sustainability 2020' report last year, ESM returns to this always-relevant subject to showcase what retailers and consumer goods businesses are doing to boost their eco-credentials. Sustainability and environmental awareness are at the forefront of consumers’ minds, to a greater degree than at any point in human history, and businesses are eager to answer the call – all of which will be examined in our Sustainability 2021 report.

Confectionery

The COVID-19 crisis has done little to curb consumer demand for sweet treats, however manufacturers should also be aware of increased shopper awareness about product formulation and emerging health and wellness trends. With this in mind, private label suppliers in particular are well-positioned to take advantage of shifts in the market. In this special report, we examine the trends driving the Confectionery category. Includes a preview of ISM, one of the leading confectionery and snacks trade fairs in the world, which takes place at Koelnmesse, Germany, from 31 January to 3 February 2021.

Fresh Produce Report

The fruit and vegetables sector is one of the most dynamic in the grocery landscape, in terms of new product innovation, supply chain efficiency, yield improvement and brand development. In our annual Fresh Produce Report, ESM investigates the importance of developing a winning fresh produce offering, as well as speaking to retailers about how they strive to exceed consumer expectations in this dynamic category.

Refrigeration

The Refrigeration sector has seen some significant changes in recent years, particularly around the area of environmental compliance, as well as measures to boost efficiency and cost reduction. In our annual look at the main trends in refrigeration, ESM explores how the refrigeration sector has responded to the COVID-19 crisis, track the future growth of the fast-growing transcritical CO2 market and feature case studies from retailers that have embraced new refrigeration solutions. In addition, working alongside Professor Toby Peters of the Centre for Sustainable Cooling, we will explore efforts to develop and deliver sustainable cooling solutions in line with the UN Sustainable Development Goals as well as international energy reduction targets.

Organic Products

With Millennials and Generation Z shoppers increasingly influencing food consumption trends, and greater demand for products that meet ethical and provenance criteria following the coronavirus crisis, certified Organic Products continue to grow in popularity. Within this category, new product innovation is being driven both by big brand development and private label. ESM reports on this dynamic category.

Household Cleaning & Home Care

The COVID-19 crisis has put hygiene in the spotlight like never before, and the Household Cleaning and Home Care categories have thus enjoyed a bumper year. Building on this will require manufacturers – both branded and private label – into consumer demand for value, added-value benefits and environmental sustainability. ESM reports.
