Heineken Opens First Brewery In Mozambique

Heineken, the world's second-largest beer-maker, has announced that it has opened its first brewery in Mozambique.

The new brewery was inaugurated by the President of the Republic of Mozambique, Filipe Nyusi, on 13 March.

The event was attended by around 500 guests, including the governor of Maputo Province, the minister of trade and industry, the minister of agriculture and the Dutch ambassador.

Jean-François van Boxmeer, chairman of the executive board and chief executive of Heineken N.V., said, "The population is young and vibrant, the middle-class is growing and living increasingly in cities, the economic perspectives are encouraging and the beer market has a great potential to grow."

State-Of-The-Art Brewery

The beer giant has invested $100 million (€88.32 million) in the new brewery, which is equipped with the latest technologies.

It will have a production capacity of 0.8 million hectolitres and will produce international brands including Heineken, Amstel, Sagres, and Strongbow.

It has also started to brew Txilar - a new, local beer for Mozambican customers.

Employment Opportunities

The new brewery has created new job opportunities for Mozambicans, offering 200 new positions. It will also support indirect jobs through its entire value chain, Heineken said.

The company is using local maize grown in Catandica district in the central province of Manica for its Txilar beer.
