Italy’s Ferrero Group has pledged to make all packaging in its operations 100% reusable, recyclable or compostable by 2025, its latest Corporate Social Responsibility Report has revealed.
According to CEO Giovanni Ferrero, this commitment further enhances the group’s approach to sustainable packaging and fits into its strategy aimed at minimising the company's environmental impact along the entire value chain.
Ferrero is a signatory to Ellen MacArthur Foundation’s New Plastics Economy Global Commitment, an initiative aimed at building a circular economy for plastics.
As part of its commitment, the company will engage its entire group, suppliers, and partners, both globally and locally, to streamline definitions and test methodologies for existing infrastructure in packaging.
As part of its R&D and Open Innovation initiatives, it will eliminate unnecessary plastic packaging; maximise the use of recycled materials; and explore projects to test new compostable packaging materials for targeted applications, with a focus on marine compostable solutions.
The confectioner is also partnering with recyclers, national waste management systems, and non-food companies to boost waste recycling initiatives.
Ferrero’s progress can also be seen in the agricultural supply chain on key raw materials, the report revealed.
The company is progressing towards fulfilling its commitment to source 100% sustainable cocoa beans for all Ferrero products by 2020.
It also expected to switch to sustainable resources for refined cane sugar and implement a traceability plan for its hazelnut supply chain.
