PepsiCo And New Plastics Economy Partner To Tackle Packaging Waste

PepsiCo has joined the 'New Plastics Economy' initiative, to highlight the global food and beverage company's continued commitment to reduce packaging waste.

The company previously pledged to switch to 100% recyclable packaging by 2025. These goals, it says, are part of its ‘Performance with Purpose’ vision to deliver ‘top-tier financial performance over the long run by integrating sustainability into its business strategy’.

Mehmood Khan, PepsiCo's Vice Chairman and Chief Scientific Officer of Global Research and Development, said, "PepsiCo is committed to taking aggressive action to promote sustainability within our direct operations, while also acting far beyond our own walls through collaboration with others.

“Unlocking new packaging material innovation and increasing consumer recycling rates requires strong partnership across the public and private sectors. The New Plastics Economy initiative is an important step towards creating a more sustainable packaging ecosystem and we are delighted to be a core partner."

Sustainable Packaging Ecosystem

PepsiCo is already involved in a series of partnerships which are helping it to tackle packaging waste. In March, it signed an agreement with biotechnology company Danimer Scientific. It also operates the PepsiCo Recycling initiative, which works with schools and university campuses in the US to boost recycling infrastructure, and raise awareness.

The New Plastics Economy is led by the Ellen MacArthur Foundation, and is bringing together industry, government, NGOs, scientists, students and citizens to build a more sustainable global plastics value chain.
