Eroski Introduces Nutri-Score Labelling On Private Label Products

Spain's Eroski has introduced 'Nutri-Score' labelling to selected private label products, in a move that the Spanish retailer says marks an 'important step forward' in providing greater transparency about the nutritional quality of foods.

The Nutri-Score labelling classes foods into five groups, indicated by coloured letters (from 'A' in dark green to 'E' in dark orange), based on the calorie, nutrient and ingredient composition of products.

The first SKUs to boast the new classifications include a crushed tomato conserve and a steam-cooked potato product, both under the Eroski private label brand, and a sun-dried tomato product under the Eroski Seleqita premium private label range.

These are the first products in Spain to bear the Nutri-Score labelling, the company said.

At The Forefront

Commenting on the measure, the director of health and sustainability at Eroski, Alejandro Martínez Berriochoa, said that the retailer "strives to always be at the forefront of information transparency", and that the introduction of the guidelines makes it easier for customers to enjoy at "balanced, sustainable, healthier diet".

Prior to the introduction of the new labelling, Eroski said that it surveyed its client partners on the most effective measure to enable consumers to enjoy a healthier diet, with some 85% in favour of the Nutri-Score guidelines.
