Conad Del Tirreno Aims To Surpass Coop In Tuscany

Italian regional supermarket chain Conad del Tirreno is aiming to surpass its rival Coop in Italy’s central region of Tuscany.

In an interview with regional daily Il Tirreno, the CEO of Conad del Tirreno, Ugo Bladi, outlined the company’s plans, which include reaching a turnover of €3 billion over the next three to four years.

According to Bladi, the retailer will invest €160 million over the next three years. Next month, new supermarkets will be opened in Viareggio, Arezzo and Cascina.

For 2018, the plan calls for the opening of new stores in Santa Croce sull’Arno, Rio Marina and downtown Empoli, increasing competition with rival Unicoop Firenze.

Also planned is the expansion of the Montopoli distribution centre, while two major store projects are under development in the Sardinia and Lazio regions.

Retail Growth

Bladi pointed out that Conad del Tirreno has a growth rate of 2.6%, and will increase this by trying to steal market share from competitors, primarily Coop and Esselunga.

Other goals include becoming the leader for fresh produce, by expanding its range of fruit and vegetables, meat and gastronomy products. In addition, Conad del Tirreno will boost the offer of free-from products, wine, and imported goods.

Conad del Tirreno is a cooperative consisting of 212 members and employing more than 9,500 people. It is present in the Tuscany, Lazio, Sardinia regions through the Conad Superstore, Conad, Conad City, Sapori & Dintorni Conad and Margherita store banners.
