Sonae, Auchan, Lidl Open New Stores In Portugal

Portuguese retail group Sonae MC has invested a total of €6 million to open new Continente Bom Dia stores in Alpendorada and Torres Vedras (pictured).

The first store has an sales area of 1,160 square metres and the second is 1,345 square metres in size, with both offering more than 10,000 SKUs. There is a special focus on fresh quality products, preferably from the surrounding region.

With the opening of the Alpendorada store, the number of Continente outlets in the district of Porto has now reached 55, while the Torres Vedras store takes the total to 52 in the Lisbon region.

Lidl Expands

Elsewhere, German retailer Lidl has opened its 12th store in the municipality of Sintra. The Linhó store has a sales area of 1,400 square metres and follows the new design concept of Lidl stores, which emphasises simplicity and efficiency.

In addition, Auchan Portugal has invested €9 million in a new Jumbo hypermarket in Évora, reports Jornal Economico.


Located in the Évora Plaza Shopping Mall, the store features a sales area of 4,000 square metres and 14 payment tills. It offers various digital solutions for an easier shopping experience, including digital catalogues, online purchases and Quiq self-service payment tills. The product offer is focused on the organic, health, wellness and dietetics segments. This is Auchan Portugal’s 31st Jumbo hypermarket.
