Sainsbury's Launches Digital Archive To Mark 150th Anniversary

UK retailer Sainsbury's has announced that it has launched a digital archive comprising items from the Sainsbury Archive, to mark its 150th anniversary.

It is the first time that the retailer is digitising around 90,000 never-before-seen items that portray the story of the Sainsbury family and the changing face of retail, from the mid-nineteenth century to the present day.

Carefully Curated Record

The trustee of the Sainsbury Archive charity, Mark Sainsbury, said, “Not every family has such a carefully curated record of its history and role in society, and I am delighted that much of the collection is now online, enabling more people to benefit from the resource.”

The digital collection will include historical images of stores, old recipe cards, images of packaging items from the supermarket’s history, and advertising materials.

Jon Hartland, north zone managing director for Sainsbury’s and incoming chair of the Sainsbury Archive charity, said, “In the 150th anniversary year, the charity's online archive gives us the opportunity to share the unique story of Sainsbury’s.”

The Archive

The Sainsbury Archive was initiated in 1969, in the Museum of London Docklands, to mark the supermarket’s centenary year and maintain a record of the contribution of the Sainsbury family in British retail.

Along with items catalogued by the supermarket itself, much of the collection is comprised of materials donated by the family, as well as colleagues and customers.
