Sustainable Palm Oil: A Commitment For Everyone

At MARCA 2022, the Italian Union for Sustainable Palm Oil and the Roundtable on Sustainable Palm Oil (RSPO) held a meeting with key retailers and their suppliers in the food and non-food sectors – on certification, progress in the fight against climate change and the protection of biodiversity, and concrete commitments for the responsible supply of palm oil.

Highlighting the role of the RSPO and the importance of certification, the event moderator and senior manager Europe (Market Transformation) of RSPO, Francesca Morgante, said, “The RSPO certification guarantees that there is no deforestation and that social requirements, such as a fair and decent wage for workers, are respected, which together guarantee that the palm oil placed on the market has produced no harm to people and the ecosystem.”

The RSPO aims for the greater involvement of Italian retailers and their suppliers in the certified sustainable palm oil supply chain.

Retailers and private-label suppliers can play a key role in promoting the complete transition towards sustainability models in the sustainable palm oil value chain.

Marta Casella, CSR manager at Carrefour Italy, said, “We have always maintained our commitment to reach 100% segregated RSPO sustainable palm oil in Carrefour brand products, following the evolution of the market in recent years.”

Casella illustrated the process initiated by Carrefour, describing the commitments undertaken on the subject of Food Transition, and, in particular, 100% Sustainable Forests.

The dialogue proved to be a valuable opportunity to take stock of the transition of the palm oil supply chain towards complete sustainability and included further contributions by Unigrà, ISF Italy, and the NGO Amici della Terra Italia.

Mauro Fontana, president of the Italian Union for Sustainable Palm Oil, underscored the positive prerogatives of sustainable palm oil – protecting the environment and biodiversity, and contributing to the achievements of the Sustainable Development Goals – and illustrated the Union’s programme of activities for the next three years.
