African Beer Market To Grow By 5% Until 2020: Canadean

The drinks-industry market-analysis body Canadean has echoed comments made by Pernod Ricard’s chairman in stating that Africa will be the beer market that grows most rapidly between 2015 and 2020, with an average rate of 5-per-cent growth predicted for this time period, TheDrinksBusiness.com reports.

A gradual increase of 37 hectolitres of beer will have been consumed over the five years, with South Africa being the most important country in terms of volume, followed by Nigeria and Angola. The boom in the market will be owed to urbanisation, GDP growth and population growth, Canadean has stated.

Piyumika Jayasena, a senior Canadean analyst, said, “This notable growth will be fostered by the flourishing economic parameters, such as increasing GDP growth rates, fast-growing urbanisation, and above all, the rising population with a working-age demographic set to surpass that of China and India.”

“The consumption growth in these markets will be stimulated by the consumer migration from home-brewed to more commercially brewed beers, and consequently, towards premium brands," he added.

“It will further be backed by the booming population in these markets. It has been an interesting fact to note that brewers are increasingly engaged in producing more innovative non-malt-based products to further enhance the consumer base of the regular beer.”
