Aldi Süd Doubles Size Of Board Of Directors

German discounter Aldi Süd has announced it plans to double the number of its board of directors in Germany from three to six members at the beginning of 2018.

From 1 January 2018, Stefan Kopp, currently the general manager of Aldi Australia, will take the role of speaker of the board. On the same date, the current managing director of Aldi Suisse, Christoph Rief, will join the board.

As of 1 February 2018, Jürgen Krone, the current managing director of the regional company Dormagen, will also join the board.

Stefan Kopp (46) has been with Aldi Süd since 1990 and worked in different areas in Germany and the UK before moving to Australia in 2000, where he became its managing director in 2014.

Christoph Rief (37) joined Aldi’s Austrian subsidiary Hofer in 2004, and was appointed managing director for the Swiss region of Domdidier in 2011.

Jürgen Krone (49) has been with Aldi Süd since 1995 and has been the managing director for the German region of Dormagen since 2006.

Continuing Members

The current board members, Peter Ernst, Max Hofmarksrichter and Jens Ritschel, will continue to serve on the board of directors.

The Aldi Süd board of directors acts as the highest advisory body for the 30 regional companies of the discount retailer in Germany.

Along with its expanding board, Aldi Süd was also recently reported to plan a major upcoming investment of around €3.5 billion, one of the largest in its history.  The investment was reported to be ring-fenced for bolstering the retailer’s German store network by 2019, which is likely to impact the group’s profits.
