NIREUS has acquired the Aquaculture Stewardship Council (ASC) certification for its sea bream and sea bass.
This makes it the first Mediterranean fish-farming company in Europe to have its sea bream and sea bass farms certified according to the Aquaculture Stewardship Council (ASC) standard.
ASC is an independent, international organisation that promotes good practices in minimising the environmental and social footprint of the aquaculture industry.
A Methodical Effort
The certification, granted by the independent audit firm Lloyd’s, is the result of a methodical effort of NIREUS in cooperation with AB Vassilopoulos, a member of Ahold-Delhaize Group, and WWF Greece since 2013.
NIREUS’s open sea farms in Aliveri, in southern Evia and in Fokida, in Western Greece, were the first to be certified in accordance with the demanding specifications set by this high standard.
The seafood supplier, once again, continues to lead all the positive developments in the Mediterranean aquaculture industry.
This certification demonstrates its commitment to operate in compliance with the responsible development of the industry, respecting the consumers, the environment, and the local communities.
Since 1988, NIREUS pioneers and offers products of high nutritional value, mainly focusing on customer satisfaction.
As a vertically integrated producer, it controls the entire value chain of all its products, ensuring that every stage of production complies with the best industry practices.
NIREUS’s sea bass, sea bream, Meagre and Pagrus have been awarded the Superior Taste Award for their exceptional taste and distinct quality.
Furthermore, NIREUS Group’s activities include the production of juveniles, fish feed and fish-farming equipment, for its own use, as well as for trading with a wide range of customers in Greece and abroad.
Through an extensive distribution network, NIREUS delivers 1.5 million fish every week to more than 30 countries.
NIREUS is one of the largest aquaculture companies in Europe, with 1,180 employees across the country, contributing to the economic and social viability of many local communities.
NIREUS grounds its operation on the fundamental principles of accountability, social responsibility, and sustainability, and is certified according to ISO 9001: 2015, ISO 14001: 2015, ISO 22000: 2005, BRC and Global GAP.
